I live in Japan. I am on a military base. I've been here 20 years as a civilian employee. The commissary, operated by DECA, won't carry this superb Gumbo base. I have asked them. They won't do it. So what do I do? I order it online and get it sent to me. It costs a bit more because of postage but, brothers and sisters, IT IS WORTH IT!
Bought this hoping to save some time. A little more salty that from scratch but all in all not too bad for a quick roux.
While I enjoy this mix, in my opinion it is TOO SALTY. Hence 4 stars instead of 5.

I spent a good while making gumbo from scratch, roux and all, and this tastes at least as good. Mine wasn’t better enough to spend any more time over a hot pot! I add my own vegetable and meats. It’s a family tradition to make gumbo with the leftover turkey and boiled carcass from Thanksgiving. I can’t buy this in stores where I live. I’m glad to find it here.
This packet makes terrific gumbo! It tastes like authentic gumbo.
