Can’t really give it a fair review as I’ve not tried other prepared roux brands. I have however, made quite a lot of roux from scratch. Savoie's dark roux is a very good second, perhaps better! Quick, easy and convenient. Gone through several jars I ordered online and even had a local grocer order some. Many gallons of gumbo later and I’m a happy boy! Honestly, I’ll have to try some of the other brands but you can’t go wrong with this tasty time saver.

Living in Texas this product takes me back to the bayou in Port Barre. I love it as it is not greasy like some others I have tried. Takes awhile to dissolve, but that is the process. Even better, for families that didn't grow up with Cajun grandparents and have no clue what goes in gumbo, there are instructions and ingredients needed listed right on the jar.

This was the 5th time I order Savoie's Old Fashiond Roux. It's a great product that helps making gumbo and other Cajun delicacies a breeze. The website is intuitive and easy to use. Delivery time was good, and my 6 glass jars of roux were securely packaged and reached me here in Texas in perfect condition.

Questions & answers

5 answered questions
Q: What is the shelf life of the dark roux?

A: Roughly about a year

Q: How exactly do I use this? Do I dissolve it in whatever base liquid before adding my meat? How much do I add?

A: Pour off any oil that has separated on top. For best results, whisk the desired amount of roux into a small amount of cold water or broth until smooth, then stir it into your simmering pot. Add more roux for a thicker gumbo, gravy, or sauce. As one starting point, Savoie's seafood gumbo recipe uses 4 tablespoons of dark roux with 3 quarts of water.

Q: It says shelf stable after opening. For how long approximately?

A: Current Savoie's product instructions say to refrigerate the roux after opening. The manufacturer lists the shelf life at roughly one year, but follow the best-by date on your jar and discard it if you notice an off odor, mold, or other spoilage.

Q: What other ingredients (besides seafood) need to be added? Also is this spicy hot?

A: This item is a Roux. This is the base of a gumbo it is used as a thickening agent in sauces. This is not a premade gumbo.

Q: Does Old Fashion Roux need to be refrigerated after opening

A: It is NOT necessary to refrigerate as this Roux is shelf stable even after opening.
