What is the famous sandwich in New Orleans?
Muffuletta - Unwrapping it always feels like opening a present. It isn't quite as ubiquitous as, say, the po'boy, which is New Orleans's other famous sandwich. But it does beg the question, "What exactly is a muffuletta?" Is it simply a sandwich made with Italian meats, cheeses and olive salad?
Why is it called a muffaletta?
The name of the sandwich comes from the bread, known in Sicily as “muffuletta” (pronounced “muffuLETta”). Salvatore “Tommy” Tusa, proprietor of the Central Grocery, a key local purveyor of the sandwich, theorizes that the bread was named after a baker in the old country.
What does muffaletta taste like?
It's salty, briny, smooth, coated with olive oil and sesame. In the foodie-rich haven of New Orleans, this is an option that really can't be missed.
Is muffaletta Cajun?
A classic New Orleans Italian sandwich with layers of meat and cheese buried in a thick, dense bread and dressed with olive salad loaded, with olive oil.
What's the difference between muffaletta and Giardiniera?
All Giardinieras and Muffalata recipes differ from one and another, but with ours we actually use the same ingredients in both. The major difference is that the Giardiniera is primarily vegetables and the Muffalata is primarily olives.
